Miss Cora Mae Folsom arrived at Hampton Institute in the winter of 1880 at the request of General Armstrong who was seeking a teacher with a medical background to work with the Indian students. Miss Folsom became a trusted friend of the students and their families.
Miss Caroline W. Andrus arrived at Hampton Institute when she was ten years of age, accompanied by her mother who had 1875-1961 come to Hampton to care for her oldest daughter, a teacher at Hampton Institute who was ill with malaria.
