Miss Cora Mae Folsom arrived at Hampton Institute in the winter of 1880 at the request of General Armstrong who was seeking a teacher with a medical background to work with the Indian students. Miss Folsom became a trusted friend of the students and their families. She made at least twelve trips to western Indian reservations to recruit Indian youth to Hampton Institute. During her long and successful career at Hampton Institute, Miss Folsom held positions as nurse, teacher, director of the Office of Indian Records, Indian correspondent, Indian editor of the Southern Workman (a Hampton Institute publication), and curator of the museum. Miss Folsom retired from Hampton Institute in 1922 after 42 years of service. Correspondence includes the following:
