Architect. Educated in the public schools of Detroit, Michigan, he received his B.A. from Cornell in 1890. From 1893-1895 he studied in France and became dean of the College of Architecture at Cornell, a position he held from 1897-1902.

Educator and humanitarian. In 1849 he and his twin brother graduated from Haverford College. Mr. Smiley remained at Haverford as an instructor until 1853 when he and his brother established an academy in Philadelphia.
