Description: 

Educator and humanitarian. In 1849 he and his twin brother graduated from Haverford College. Mr. Smiley remained at Haverford as an instructor until 1853 when he and his brother established an academy in Philadelphia. In 1860 he became teacher and principal of the Friends School in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1879 he was appointed to the Board of Indian Commissioners by President Hayes. Mr. Smiley organized the Mohonk Conferences. He was a member of the Hampton Institute Board of Trustees from 18889-1891 before he resigned.
