General correspondence from Indian students can be found with the papers of Miss Caroline Andrus, General Armstrong, Mr. F. C. Briggs, Miss Cora Folsom, Dr. Frissell and other faculty members who were involved with Indian education at Hampton Institute. Included are letters from parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other relatives of Indian students attending Hampton Institute; Christmas letters to Indian students who had returned home, either after having graduated or for other reasons; information of a general nature such as appropriations reports, correspondence, and reports regarding funding of Indian education at Hampton Institute; attendance records and reports regarding attendance of Indian students; United States Civil Service Commission examination forms and other government data regarding entrance into government service by Hampton's Indian graduates; citizenship information regarding Hampton's Indian students' celebrations and observances of the Dawes Act (government bill sponsored by Senator Henry L. Dawes for the emancipation of Indians as citizens of the United States) enrollment information with detailed lists of Indian student enrollment between the years 1878-1923; health lists, records, reports and other information regarding the health of Indian students including death rates, diets, menus and annuals reports by the principal; Hampton's Indian grandchildren including second and third generations and lists of names of students whose parents or Grandparents attended Hampton Institute; annual reports of the principal regarding Indian education at Hampton Institute; letters, lists, records and other information regarding scholarship information for Indian students; letters, notices, printed materials and other information regarding student activities of Indian students.
